Key West Catch of the Week - July 28, 2014

Within the sprawling waters of Key West, hardly a day goes by without a large number of spectacular catches, as these areas provide some of the best Key West light tackle fishing available. This sunny and pleasant week was no different. In fact, there were so many surprising catches that it was difficult to choose a catch of the week. However, there was one that stood out among the rest, earning itself a place as the Key West Catch of the Week. Although the waters around this area contain a wide range of different types and species of fish, the subject of this weeks award is the majestic Mahi Mahi.

This Key West Catch of the Week was caught by Clay, a fisherman traveling to Key West from Gainesville. On one of our premier Coolwater Charters, Clay was able to haul in a massive 30-35 pound Mahi Mahi. While Mahi Mahi catches are not so uncommon, it's the size of the fish that earned Clay the Catch of the Week Award. Typically, Mahi Mahi weigh in at 15-25 pounds. It's rare to catch one above 30 pounds, one of the primary reasons as to why this catch was so memorable.

Mahi Mahi are a unique species of fish that can be identified due to their lengthy dorsal fins that generally line the entirety of their bodies. Clay was likely able to recognize the fish in a matter of seconds once it surfaced from the waters, as it is marked by bright green, blue and gold hues all around its body, making it one of the most breathtaking fishes to grace the waters surrounding Key West. Once hooked, Mahi Mahi are sly and acrobatic fish that have a tendency to show more fighting spirit than most species, making this catch by Clay all the more impressive.

Mahi Mahi are often found swimming near the surface of the water, typically amongst debris or floating seaweed. Though Mahi Mahi can be found all throughout the world, they have a particular preference for areas around Key West because of the prevalence of crabs, mackerel and squid, which the Mahi Mahi like to feed on. If you are looking to try your hand at catching a Mahi Mahi and besting the huge one caught by Clay then come on down to Key West and experience some true Key West light tackle fishing on one of our exciting Coolwater Charters.
